Workspace Security:

Public vs. Private

Public PBworks are indexed by search engines like google and can be read by anyone on the web

Private PBworks are not shown in search results.  They are not accessible by anyone on the web.  You must be invited to read or edit a private workspace.

There are positive reasons for students work to appear on line (students tend to produce better results when their work is seen by others) and there are negative aspects (students may post private information that is shown to the entire web).  It is for you to chose if your workspace is public or private.  Keep in mind that all of the examples we are using are public workspaces.

To set Workspace security

When you first set up your workspace, you're asked two questions about security - you can always change your mind!  Adjust your security settings at any time by clicking on "Settings" in the upper right hand corner, and then "Workspace Security" on the left hand side.

To set a private workspace:

Go to workspace security in your settings.  The first question is who can view this workspace. Chose "only people I invite or approve"

This options means that users must be invited or approved for access before they are allowed to see any content on your workspace. Your workspace will not be displayed in search engine results.

To set a public workspace:

Go to workspace security in your settings.  The first question is who can view this workspace. Chose"Anyone"

Your workspace is available for reading by anyone on the Internet. This also means that your workspace can be found by search engines and displayed on search results.  If you have this question set to "Anyone," then anyone will be able to read your content without logging in.

We highly recommend having a discussion on wiki-etiquette with your students to ensure that personal information is not revealed online.  Here is an example wiki etiquette page.
